We will be recognizing our Tony Hodge recipients as well, on Wednesday. We heard through the grapevine we may be in the double digits with the number of designees! Congratulations to those individuals!

The dinner, business meeting and President’s Party on Thursday night will be something you won’t want to miss. To enhance the overall experience, we kindly request that you dress at least business casual, but encourage professional to semi-formal attire. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Hello there! As we enter February of 2024, I hope everyone had a great holiday season, mine was good till my beloved Miami Dolphins did their “that’s so Dolphins” nonsense to close out the season. Hope everyone enjoys Super Bowl 58. My prediction is the San Francsico 49ers will win a close one vs the Kansas City Chiefs and the Swifties. Bonus movie list this newsletter! The full list is in the pages that follow, but here are my favorite highlights from 2023 (which may include some things from the small screen).

In December we held our annual TPP Seminar, which going forward will be conference instead of seminar. This year had a record attendance of 110 attendees! The TPP Steering Committee put on a fantastic show over two and a half days. We also held another Excel workshop which was geared toward a more general approach, and it was a hit for our members. This same workshop will be offered during our Annual Conference in April. Our very own Kevin Hayes taught the 7-hour USPAP class on Tuesday. Big thanks to Lori Dorian from Pinellas County. As the TPP chair, she and the TPP steering committee set up another great TPP Conference. Our sponsor, Tax Management Associates, provided a great afternoon break on Thursday. Tangible Personal Property is of course the best area at the Property Appraiser’s office and yes, I am biased. With the new year, that means the Annual FCIAAO Conference is right around the corner. This year the event will be held at the Doubletree by Hilton at the Entrance to Universal Studios in Orange County April 17 through 19. Once again, we are happy to welcome The Florida Association of Cadastral Mappers (FACM) to our conference. The FACM session will be on Wednesday, April 17. Please go to their website to find out more. The Steering Committees have put together fantastic sessions for you. We have our conference flyers out now and the full agenda will be available soon. Make sure you book your hotel rooms by March 25 to receive the discounted rate. (cont’d next page) -Godzilla Minus One (Best movie of 2023, will die on this hill) -Oppenheimer (Christopher Nolan does no wrong) -Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (Harrison Ford is forever Dr Henry “Indiana” Jones Jr) -The Super Mario Brothers Movie (Since I got that NES for Christmas, it’s always been Mario time) -Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 -Star Trek Picard (Superior Klingon technology and that scene at the end of episode 9) -Star Wars Ahsoka (I got live action Rebels characters and Thrawn, life is good) -Monarch Legacy of Monsters (it’s Godzilla’s world and we are just living in it)

Nominations are now open for our yearly awards which will be presented in Orlando at the Business Meeting and Dinner on April 18. Established in 2017, the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Member of the Year Award are given to honor those members who have made outstanding contributions to the Chapter. Nominations Are Open! Seeking nominations for Lifetime Achievement and Member of the Year Awards for 2023-2024

Pre-Seminar Excel Workshop aims to strengthen spreadsheet skills

Prior to the Tangible Personal Property Seminar December 4 & 5, thirty students partook in a two-day Excel Workshop which focused on the basic concepts of the spreadsheet software. The aim of the course was to familiarize them with the fundamental features and functions of Excel they could use in their daily work. In 2022, we offered our first Excel workshop targeted at Tangible Personal Property and based on our feedback from that course, it was evident a beginning skills class was needed. The beginning Excel course is meant to

equip students with skills and tasks they would be using every day. Topics such as keyboard short-cuts, navigating a worksheet, formulas and functions and cut, copy and paste techniques are covered. The course then jumps into functions and formulas at more depth and then creating Pivot tables and filtering and sorting the data to streamline your data collection process. The course was lead by Christopher Duncan from CDA Graphic Design from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Student feedback was excellent and we will be offering more classes in the future. Our goal is to provide you with education and tools you can use everyday in your work.

Who will be this year’s recipients? It’s up to you!

To qualify for these awards, nominees must be a FCIAAO Regular, Subscribing or Associate Member who must be in good standing with at least 15 years of FCIAAO membership and who has made an outstanding contribution to the Chapter through active participation in its activities. In addition, they have contributed to the realization of the FCIAAO mission in his or her career. Nominations must be received by February 23, 2024 and must be submitted to the FCIAAO 2nd Vice President, Wynta Loughrey via email wloughrey@sc-pa.com Upon receipt of the nominees, the Executive Board will use a majority vote to choose the recipient of the Member of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Awards for the 2023-2024 year

Instructor, Chris Duncan, leads the group through Excel exercises.

Navigating Networking: A First-timers Guide to Conference Connections Dear Members,

3. Initiate Small Talk Break the ice by starting with simple questions. Ask about their experiences with the conference, or seek advice on relevant industry topics and best practices within their office. Small talk often leads to more substantial discussions. 4. Active Listening Be attentive during conversations. Show genuine interest in what others are saying, and ask follow-up questions. This demonstrates your engagement and helps build rapport. 5. Attend Networking Events Take advantage of scheduled networking sessions or social events. The Designees’ Lounge, if you hold an IAAO Designation, is a great place to meet other designees. The Welcome Reception on the first night will provide a more relaxed atmosphere for conversation, and may even have a theme... Lastly, the conference banquet on Thursday night is where you can engage with all attendees, dressed in a spectrum of professional attire, during an evening that begins with the FCIAAO’s annual meeting, followed by awards, and a formal full service dinner.

We hope to see many first-time attendees at the 2024 FCIAAO Annual Conference! There are many newcomers to the property assessment industry and we welcome you. Attending your first conference can be both exciting and nerve wracking, especially when it comes to networking, so here are some tips to help you make meaningful connections and maximize your conference experience: 1. Prepare Elevator Pitch Craft a concise introduction that highlights your name, county, what department you are part of and how long you have been a part of the profession. This will make a lasting impression and open doors for further conversation 2. Research Before You Go Time in between sessions moves fast – review the agenda in advance and decide which sessions you want to attend beforehand and create a schedule. Most important, don’t be afraid to go outside your comfort zone. The knowledge you gain from a session outside of your normal line of work will give you great talking points and help you engage in meaningful conversations with attendees you meet for the first time.

SAGE SULLIVAN DUVAL COUNTY

6. Exchange Contact Information

Don't hesitate to exchange business cards or contact information. Follow up with a personalized email after the conference, expressing your pleasure at meeting them and reinforcing the connection. Another great way to connect is to ask if they have LinkedIn at the end of an interaction – this is a quick and immediate way to connect without having to remember at a later date.

( Continued on page 14)

7. Be Approachable Maintain open body language and a friendly demeanor. Approachability encourages others to initiate conversations with you, enhancing your networking opportunities.

Remember, networking is about building relationships, not just collecting business cards. Approach each interaction with authenticity, and you'll find that your first conference can be a stepping stone to a robust professional network. Best of luck and see you there! Sage

This one-day workshop is designed to help refresh the mass appraisal techniques used in the valuation process and also to help establish some processes and procedures for unusual or more challenging events. Topics discussed include: USPAP, Scope of Work, Mass Appraisal, Market Value, Highest and Best Use Analysis, Neighborhood Analysis, Benchmarks, Sales Validation, Sales Ratio Analysis, Sales Chasing and Trending.
