Happy Fall! Happy Football Season!
Now that TRIM is over and our VAB appeal proceedings begin, we come to one of the busiest parts of our year. I wish everyone the best of luck in their upcoming hearings! The 88th IAAO Annual Conference just wrapped up a few weeks ago in Boston, Massachusetts. I, along with many of your board members and other Florida IAAO members, were able to attend and represent the Flor-

ida contingent. First and foremost, I would like to congratulate Mr. Patrick Alesandrini on his installation as the 2023 President of the IAAO. This is an amazing and well - deserved honor and those of us in Florida know how lucky the IAAO membership is to have him lead this organization. There were many informative sessions and takeaways from presen- tations by appraisal jurisdictions all around the country and world. The Keynote speaker again this year was amazing. Adrienne Hazlet, a victim of the Boston Marathon bombing, inspired us with her story of obstacles and triumphs. Her story of resilience in the face of adversity touched us all and left us with a feeling of hope and a perspective of never giving up. I also had the honor this year of accepting on the behalf of the Chap- ter the Virginia Cup! With sixteen new designees this past year, we came out on top for the 11th time! The Virginia Cup is one of the coveted awards at the conference, and as usual, our commitment to education and professional development was recognized. Although we did not win Chapter of the Year, our eyes are on the prize for next year! In addition, several of our Property Appraisers Offices were recognized for earning or re - certifying the Certificate of Excellence in Assessment Administration (CEAA). I would like to congratulate the following offices:
DIRECTOR Nikki Pontello, CFE Chief Administrative Officer St Johns County
St. John ’ s County Property Appraiser ’ s Office – Initial Certification of the CEAA Osceola County Property Appraiser ’ s Office – Second Recertification of the CEAA

If your office is considering starting the process the obtain the CEAA, remember we have a reposi- tory of submissions from most of the counties who have completed this process on our website. Palm Beach County Property Appraiser ’ s Office also was awarded the 2022 Public Information Program Award for their video series entitled “ Outliers. ” Congratulations! Terry Taylor from Or- ange County also received the Kenneth J. McCarren Award for recruiting the most, new IAAO members for the award year. Great job, Terry! If you have not had the opportunity to attend an IAAO conference, I highly recommend it. The valuable information and ideas, as well as the networking opportunities, are just two of the rea- sons you should consider attending. There are many scholarships available through IAAO and the Florida Chapter that can assist with the costs. In December, we will be holding our Annual Tangible Personal Property Seminar in Kissimmee, Florida, December 7 - 9, 2022. This year the TPP Committee has worked hard to bring you a new pre - conference two - day Workshop called “ Excel for TPP. ” Bringing the membership pertinent and relevant education is one of our main objectives and the TPP Steering Committee has exem- plified this with this workshop. As always, your Executive Board is here to serve you. If you have questions, concerns, or sugges- tions, please do not hesitate to contact any one of us. This is your chapter, and we are here to help!

BEST PRACTICES CONT… FCIAAO DEMOGRAPHIC CAMPAIGN
Connecting with your audience is key to the suc- cess of any people oriented endeavor. One of the ways organizations can best do this is by first learning who their audience is from both an inter- nal and external perspective. In our efforts to embrace, adopt and promote this best practice, the FCIAAO will launch a chapter demographic campaign in 2023. Once launched, members will be asked to update their membership profiles, which will contain a few more fields to help us get to know our membership and their needs. More details to come in the near future.
We ’ re excited to get to know you all better!

2022 IAAO CONFERENCE RECAPCONT… FCIAAO SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
“ I would like to extend my genuine appreciation to the Florida Chapter of the IAAO for the scholarship award granted to me to attend the 2021 IAAO Inter- national Conference located in Boston Massachu- setts. While in attendance, I was able to see the re- cent advancements and developments in our indus- try first - hand. The networking aspect of the conference reached all around the globe. I had the pleasure to connect with domestic colleagues as well as a group who attended all the way from Seoul, Korea. Educational sessions were a rewarding opportunity to earn credit hours. The curriculum of the sessions I attended were informative and useful. Interesting topics were discussed from various localities and were extremely enlightening. I strongly encourage any qualified members to take advantage of scholarship applications in the future. By attending a conference you will be amazed at the resources available to you through education ses- sions, sponsor participation and exhibitions all of- fered for your personal growth. ”

2022 IAAO CONFERENCE RECAPCONT… FCIAAO SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
Thank you to FCIAAO for selecting me as a recipient of the IAAO Annual Confer- ence Scholarship. The conference was my first and an enriching experience that broadened my perspective and chal- lenged me to grow professionally. I attended some very informative ses- sions and learned from the best in the industry. It was interesting to see how different jurisdictions operate and what innovative tools they are currently using. So much has improved in just the 12 short years since I have joined the Hills- borough County Property Appraiser ’ s Of- fice. I was fortunate to have met like- minded individuals from our industry that are driven and continuously looking for ways to make a difference in this world. Participating in the roundtable discussions introduced new ideas that can be implemented for the betterment of our agency, the citizens we serve, and motivated me to want to become more
Beba Sheehy Hillsborough County
involved. One of the many highlights was attend- ing the opening ceremony and listening to the mo- tivational keynote speaker Adrianne Haslet, 2013 Marathon bombing survivor, tell her story. Her speech was a genuinely moving experience. By the time she finished, I don ’ t believe there was a dry eye in the room. If I could offer one suggestion to agency leaders, it would be to allow their non - leadership staff mem- bers the opportunity to attend future conferences. It would be beneficial for their jurisdictions, as the exposure provides useful knowledge that can be taken back and applied in the organization ’ s daily operations. I would highly encourage anyone in the assessment world to attend an annual confer- ence, and strongly recommend that those who haven ’ t been apply for a scholarship and be given an opportunity to attend one. This event was such an eye opener for me, a watershed moment in my career, and an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life.

COUNTY SPOTLIGHT: ALACHUA COUNTY
Alachua County has a history of adaptation and innova- tion. In the 1850s the county adapted by moving its seat to the newly named Gainesville to connect Alachua County to the planned railroads. Being connected to the railroads allowed for agriculture to flourish, bringing in new industries to the region, and connecting tourists to the outdoor beauty of Alachua County. When the big freezes of winters 1894 - 1895 decimated the agriculture industry, many of the towns reinvented themselves into phosphate mining towns. This led to Alachua County shipping over half of Florida's phosphate. In 1906 the University of Florida was officially opened and has con- tinued to grow and lead innovations through its educa- tional paths from that point forward. In the 1930s - 1950s, Alachua County adapted again and became part of the tung oil industry. World War II came, and Florida saw that 90% of its tung oil was being shipped out of Alachua and Bradford counties. The growth and identity changes Alachua County has seen throughout the years have shown that people and the county always persevere and move forward.
Alachua County is located in the North Central part of Florida. It has a population of 278,468 as of the 2020 US census. Alachua County also houses 57,000 students from the University of Florida. The County has a feel of a busy metropolitan area to a small Americana commu- nity. For education, the University of Florida is also ac- companied by Santa Fe College, and both bring great educational and professional advancements Hon. Ayesha Solomon
to Florida and Alachua County resi- dents. The county is also home to an outstanding healthcare industry in UF Health (Shands), North Florida Hospi- tal, UF College of Medicine, and other great biotech companies located throughout the county. The agriculture industry is always evolving and is part of the DNA of Alachua County. The arts community is brisling and continuous throughout Alachua County's history and helps shape the character of the community through Music, Literature, and Fine Arts. Alachua County is also proud to protect and care for six Florida State Parks each with its own unique identity.
