PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
EXECUTIVE BOARD
As I sit here at my desk writing to you all, the 32 nd Annual conference in St. Petersburg is still very fresh on my mind. It was a wonderful event, allowing us all to catch up with old friends and hopefully, make some new ones as well. This year we added the Administrative Track for the first time, which was very well re- ceived. Based on the reviews, it will have its own track next year and will not be sharing

space with the other tracks. Another first was the Women in Leader- ship presentation. FCIAAO was the first chapter offering this session, following its very successful presentation at the international confer- ence in Minneapolis, MN last fall. It was very well attended and re- ceived rave reviews. We had an excellent panel of professional women (Katie Grasso, Past President of FCIAAO, Abby Roberson, CFE, and Dorothy Jacks, past president of both the FCIAAO and the IAAO), who provided insight into what being a professional woman in our industry looks like. Opal Hudson, who was instrumental in the international presentation of this session, moderated the event. All of the tracks were informative and very well received. Our steering committees did an excellent job this year. They work quite hard putting these tracks together and without their help, the conference would not be as successful and relevant as it was. This year we had near record numbers again, with 297 attendees, in- cluding 30 Property Appraisers. We are very thankful for the support of our Property Appraisers, because without their backing, this event would never happen. On Friday morning we had a meeting with the attending Property Appraisers to seek their advice and counsel as we continue to grow and move forward as a chapter. It was a very produc- tive and beneficial meeting for the FCIAAO Board. We also had 30 ven- dors at this this year’s conference. I hope you had time to visit them all and make good use of the opportunities to speak with them. The Tony Hodge Education Award is presented to new designation re- cipients, along with a $500 check. This year we had 32 award recipients and 6 individuals who did not qualify for the award but received their designation. With a total of 38 new designations awarded, and the po- tential for more this summer, our chapter is in a strong position to win the Virginia Cup for a third straight year. Congratulations to all those who have received a designation in the past year. We are all very proud of you and your accomplishments.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (CONTINUED)
I would like to thank the Honorable Mike Twitty for the welcome to Pinellas County and his wonder- ful assessment video. In each conference location we ask for recommendations of a local charity for our chapter to support. This year, the charity selected was Suncoast Center, Inc. and the chapter was able to donate $786 and toiletries. Great job everyone on your generosity. Greg McHenry is the Vice President of the IAAO International and was with us to provide greetings from the International Board of Directors of IAAO and to assist with the presentation of the Tony Hodge Awards. We will be meeting next year (2020) at the Ft. Lauderdale Marina Hotel, which is a beautiful facility located on the intracoastal waterway. We will be offering some unique excursions at this location, so watch for emails and future announcements. The board will be meeting this summer to work on a long-range strategic plan for the chapter along with our vision for the future. We are excited to bring some new opportunities to the membership for education and involvement. We will also be working on the 2019 TPP Conference in Kissimmee, De- cember 8-13, 2019 and the 2020 Conference in Ft. Lauderdale. Our steering committees are being recruited at this time and that process will be complete within the next 60 days. Please reach out to us if you have any recommendations for people to serve on a com- mittee or topics for tracks. We welcome your correspondence and input.
Finally, mark your calendars for the International Confer- ence in Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada, September 8-11, 2019. It will be an event that you will not want to miss. I look forward to serving you as your president for the next year. I want to thank past president Katie Grasso for all of her support and guidance over the past year. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any ideas, com- ments, questions, or concerns.
Respectfully,
Pat Alesandrini, CAE, RES, MAI, SRA, CFE

FCIAAO ANNUAL CONFERENCE - ST PETERSBURG | MAY 2019
Our 32nd Annual Conference was a great success in sunny St. Petersburg at the Hilton Bayfront. With nearly 300 attendees, 30 Property Appraisers, and 30 vendors, the week was busy, informative, and fun. Prior to the Conference, Vice President Pat Alesandrini, MAI, SRA, CAE, RES, CFE of Hillsborough County taught IAAO Workshop 181 - the 7-hour National USPAP update. We were also excited to offer a popular 4 hour seminar, Valuation Resources for Solar Photovoltaic Systems, taught by Sandra Ad- montis, SRA, LEED Green Associate, CDEI. Wednesday’s General Session included a welcome from the Honorable Mike Twitty, Pinellas County Property Appraiser, who entertained us all with a song written especially for the Conference titled “The PAO Will Survive”. The Board switched things up a bit this year for the Welcome Reception and brought it off-site for the first time ever. Attendees were able to enjoy the German food hall and brew house, the Hofbrauhaus, while networking with their peers. Thank you to Thomson Reuters for once again sponsoring this great event! Thursday was filled with informative presentations and introduced our newest track, the Administra- tive track. We look forward to bringing more admin topics to our members in the future! All presen- tations are available to FCIAAO Members through the Members Link/Presenter Materials section of our website. This year we presented 32 Tony Hodge Awards to FCIAAO Members who received their IAAO Profes- sional Designation, a new record! To see a complete list of the Tony Hodge recipients turn to page 17 . Thanks to our numerous sponsors we were able to provide swag bags, a Welcome Reception on Wednesday, Beverage Breaks throughout the conference, and entertainment at the banquet and Presi- dent’s Party. Thank you to all who attended this year! We hope everyone enjoyed the conference and will continue to attend, learn, network and hopefully get involved with the Chapter. We are always looking for vol- unteers, presenters, committee members and board members.

FCIAAO AWARD WINNERS
Last year, the Chapter gave out the first ever Lifetime Achievement and Member of the Year Awards. We believe it is important to recognize members who have made significant contributions to the Chapter. Nomination sub- missions were due at least 60 days prior to the conference.
Member of the Year Award
With a majority vote, the award may be conferred by the FCIAAO Executive Board and presented to a FCIAAO Regular, Subscribing or Associate Member (in good standing) who has made a significant contribution to the Chapter in the previous year through active participation in its activities and who has made an outstanding contribution to the realization of the FCIAAO mission in his or her career.
This year’s recipient has been very active at both the Chapter and International levels for many years. He has served as a designation advisor (holding the CAE, RES and AAS designations), an IAAO committee member, is an IAAO instructor, and has pre- sented at this Chapter and International conferences. He is not only an advocate for professional designations, he also is an advocate for this Chapter. He currently serves on the Chapter’s designation committee and has chaired the Real Property Steering Committee for the past two years. His contributions and enthusiasm represent the definition of a volunteer. This year the award went to Terry Taylor, CAE, RES, AAS, CFE from Orange County.
Lifetime Achievement Award
With a majority vote, the award may be conferred by the FCIAAO Executive Board and presented to a Regular, Subscribing or Associate member (in good standing with at least 15 years of FCIAAO membership) who has made significant contributions to the Chapter through active participation in its activities and who has made an out- standing contribution to the realization of the FCIAAO mission in his or her career.
The first recipient of the LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD is someone who has supported the Chapter since its inception and believes the Chapter is an important part of educating his staff to make them better informed to perform their duties. In addition to his local input, he has been very active on the International level, being a Past President of IAAO and a recent member of the Inaugural Fellows program. He is currently in his 10 th term as Property Appraiser and we are grateful for his lifetime of exceptional contributions. The first recipient of the 2019 Lifetime Achieve- ment Award is the Honorable Ed Crapo from Alachua County.
This year’s second recipient of the LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD has been an active Chapter member since 1992 and served on the Execu- tive Board, ultimately as President in 2000. He was the first person in the state to earn the Assessment Administration Specialist Designation and subsequently served as the inaugural Chair of the Chapter’s Professional Designation Group. He has attended countless conferences and seminars (sometimes presenting the legislative update), and allows numerous mem- bers of staff to attend and participate on Committees and the Executive Board. He is also a Past President of the Florida Association of Property Appraisers. The second recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, is the Honorable Roger Suggs from Clay County. FCIAAO members are encouraged to nominate fellow members to be voted upon by the FCIAAO Executive Board. Nomination forms are available on the Chapter website HERE and must be submitted 60 prior to the to the FCIAAO Annual Conference.

PAST PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
I truly have enjoyed my years of involvement with the Chapter and it was an honor serving as the 2018-19 President. The networking opportunities, con- tacts, and friendships I have made over the years are truly priceless. These events would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the Ex- ecutive Board and the Steering Committees and I have enjoyed working with them over the years. I would like to thank our Property Appraisers once again for your support and leadership and a special thank you to Past President Tracy Drake for your guidance throughout the year.
Katie C. Grasso, AAS,CFE
I have been involved with the Executive Board for eight years and have seen it change and evolve into what it is today. I am confident that success will continue because of the dedicated professionals we have in our Chapter. I am looking forward to one last year on the board and hope to see you at future Chapter events.
Respectfully,

Continuing our effort to give back to the communities that host us for our conferences, this year we held a 50/50 charity raffle to benefit the Suncoast Center, Inc. . The Suncoast Center provides a com- prehensive range of evidence based programs that address emotional wellness, trauma services, and child advocacy to individuals and families throughout Pinellas County.
FCIAAO Executive Board Member Kenny Pennington, CFE, CBC along with volun- teers from Pinellas County and the FCIAAO Committees sold tickets throughout the conference. On the last day of the confer- ence we were proud to present the Suncoast Center, Inc. with a check for $786! MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: TARA PRINCE
Name: Tara Prince
County: Charlotte
What do you do for the PA? I am the Senior Cartographer/GIS Tech. My focus is keeping the ownership layer on our GIS website up to date by processing cuts, consolidations, new subdivi- sions and condos. We also verify legal descriptions on documents, create web ap- plications through ArcGIS.com for the appraisers to use and verify the land size for parcels. We are really starting to get into creating custom web applica- tions with ArcGIS.com and we are always coming up with new features to cre- ate in GIS.
Tara Prince
How long have you been employed by the PA? I have been here for 13 years.
What do you like most about your job? I LOVE my job, but my favorite part is the technology. I can’t get enough. I was once told I drink the ESRI Kool-Aid. Where was your first job? Prepping old building permits for scanning and scanning them for the Clerk of Courts. Exciting stuff, right?
Where were you born? Port Charlotte, FL
Where was your best vacation ever? Sapphire Valley, NC. If you’re looking for cool weather in July, I highly recommend it.
What are your hobbies? Fishing, reading and spending time with my guys.
What do you plan to do when you retire? I’d like to travel all over the world and I’ll probably volunteer at a dog rescue.
What advice would you give new employees? They pay isn’t great, but the benefits like health insurance and retirement are totally worth it. You couldn’t ask for a more loyal group of people to work with.

PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATION SPOTLIGHT: KRISTOFER OBERGFOLL, AAS, CFE
Name: Kristofer Obergfoll
County: Clay
Position: Commercial Appraiser
Briefly describe your appraisal/assessment experience.
I have a total of five years of experience. I began as a Residential Ap- praiser in 2014, and have been a Commercial Appraiser since 2016.
Kristofer Obergfoll, AAS, CFE
Why did you pursue the AAS designation?
One of the first things I noticed when I began my career was the professionalism and wealth of knowledge in those who held designations. For me, pursuing the AAS designation was an oppor- tunity to expand my understanding within this profession and to ensure my experience is quality ex- perience.
What was one of the biggest challenges you faced while pursuing your CAE designa- tion?
No specifics comes to mind at this moment, which is not to say there were not. I am fortunate to work in an environment that promotes higher education and career development, which became a positive reinforcement for me while pursing my AAS. I felt I could always reach out for advice if big challenges arose.
What advice/suggestions would you give to someone considering an IAAO designa- tion?
The advice I would give is to be proactive. Establish tangible dates for completing course work and apply what you learn when possible.
What is your favorite vacation and/or hobbies you enjoy?
Some of my favorite hobbies include fishing, running 5k races, playing 18-holes of golf, and going to the beach.
If you could have dinner with one person (dead or alive) who would that be? Why?
I would have to say Michelangelo, not the turtle but the Italian painter and sculpture. The works of art that emerged from the High Renaissance era in Europe has always fascinated me; Michelangelo set the bar for that time.

PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATION COMMITTEE NEWS
One aspect of the Chapter’s mission is to promote the professional develop- ment of our members. In preparing for the 2019 Tony Hodge Educational Award presentation at the FCIAAO Annual Conference in St. Petersburg, I did a little research. Since 1999, there have been 151 Tony Hodge Educational Award recipients, resulting in over $58,000 in award money to new IAAO designees. Wow! And since we all enjoy a little friendly competition, I thought I’d also share the re- sults of which counties have produced the most recipients. As indicated be- low, twenty-four counties have at least one recipient. Clay and Leon are tied for fourth with nine each; Orange has fifteen; Palm Beach is in second place with twenty-six; and Pinellas is the leader with forty. Shazam!

IAAO designations signify exceptional professionalism and competence in property valuation, proper- ty tax administration and property tax policy. Many consider a designation to be one of the highest professional achievements and individual can obtain. In 2018, we established a new FCIAAO record with 28 Tony Hodge Educational Award Recipients and won the IAAO Virginia Cup for the 8 th time. This year, we set a new record with 32 recipients, includ- ing a recipient who earned three designations in a month (Hon. Scott Russell) and another who is a Certified Barbeque Judge (Bruce Wright)! The Board and the Professional Designation Committee ap- plauds them all for their commitment and perseverance. By earning their designations, they join an exclusive club of assessment professionals.
